HydroCopper®

From mass flow to cash flow

Outotec's revolutionary HydroCopper® process is a costeffective method for producing high-quality copper wire rod directly from a wide range of concentrates. The integrated HydroCopper® production chain provides savings in freight and operational costs and gives you the opportunity for higher total copper recovery in an environmentally friendly way.

A unique and effective means of producing high-quality copper products directly from copper concentrate.

Outotec has developed a new HydroCopper® process for the treatment of chalcopyrite concentrates. The process offers copper producers a valuable new way to reduce both capital and operating costs. Locating a HydroCopper® plant close to a concentrator brings major savings, as the need for transportation and storage is eliminated. The level of working capital is much reduced, and it takes only a few days to enrich concentrate to end-product copper.

HydroCopper® process operates in a chloride environment allowing economical copper metal production in the capacity ranges of 20 000 to 150 000 tonnes per year. In the process, concentrates are refined into high quality copper powder equal to LME classification A cathode copper. The powder is further melted and can then be cast in any form required. Contained silver and gold in the concentrates are recovered. The process produces no sulphuric acid. The process enables economical production of copper metal from a variety of concentrates including those bearing low copper values.

The process is a simple way to begin copper production on-site, close to the concentrator. With HydroCopper®, even small-scale production plants become economically viable. Processing also low-grade and metallurgically difficult ore bodies becomes feasible through a low-cost integrated process chain.

Outotec has designed and implemented a HydroCopper® demonstration plant in Pori, Finland. The plant has facilities to make demonstration runs using customer's concentrates, to ensure their suitability for the process.
