High rate thickener helps Saraji achieve higher efficiencies and reliability

A new high-rate Outokumpu SUPAFLO® thickener has been installed by BMA (the alliance between BHP Billiton and Mitsubishi) as part of the ongoing enhancement of production efficiencies at the Saraji coal mine in the Bowen basin.

The 35-metre thickener, used on coal tailings, is designed to provide much higher efficiency within a more compact area than the concrete thickener it replaces, says Outokumpu Technology's Project Manager, Mr  Richard Barbour.

"With Saraji currently producing about five million tonnes a year of high-grade coking coal, BMA has made considerable improvements to enhance yields and efficiencies. The new high rate thickener we have just  commissioned there is part of this process, providing both proven reliable performance on coal and low operating costs," he said.

Outokumpu SUPAFLO® high rate thickeners reduce surface areas required by up to 90 per cent, compared with older, more conventional designs. Their patented low-drag rake arm is designed to increase reliability by reducing the torque loading on the drive. Reliability is also enhanced by a proven hydraulic drive with four levels of system protection, as well as a robust control system.

The Saraji thickener features a truss bridge and new feedwell design incorporating open baffles . The new design was developed following an internal research program using Computational Fluid Dynamics. The new feedwell has been used on a number of recently installed SUPAFLO® thickeners.
